Before I begin, I want to say that I've spent the previous two days researching my problem and have yet to find anything that describes my specific issue. I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop I got from my mother-in-law a few years ago.

Finally, i opened the command prompt and attempted a chkdsk c: command which found no problems with the HDD. I have not run the chkdsk c: /f /r command as the read-only mode didn't find any problems to be fixed.
